The condition, called gonorrheal, affects between 45 and 90 percent of women of reproductive age and is the leading cause of absenteeism from school and work among adolescents and women in their twenties, according to a press release from the American Chemical Society. Current treatments, such as analgesics, anti-inflammatory and oral contraceptives are ineffective in about one third of women with moderate to severe gonorrheal, said the press release. Menstrual cramps are caused by contractions of the uterus. In the gonorrheal, the uterus contracts more frequently.
The British pharmaceutical company Vanti Ltd, a pill in research, called VA111913, which is designed to block the hormone depressing, which has to do with the regulation of contraction of the uterus. Last year, a Phase 1 clinical trial showed that VA111913 was safe. The drug is currently in phase 2 clinical trials to assess how well it works for pain control in women with gonorrheal. The results of studies being conducted by Vanti are expected later this year.
